Your exercises are completely based on your diagnoses and the procedures you undergo to combat the pain. One prominently used, non-surgical method is epidural steroid injections . The steroid is injected into the epidural space and decreases inflammation around the spinal nerves. If you are undergoing epidural steroid injections, you will want to take the rest day off for a little downtime to not cause unnecessary inflammation. After your brief resting period, you will want to resume normal, but not overly vigorous activity. It is best to start with walking slowly. For every 30 minute sitting period, you should take 5 to 10 minutes to get up and walk around. It may be uncomfortable at first, but if you stick with regular slow activity for the first day, you can build up to more activity.

The following patients should not have this injection: if you are allergic to any of the medications to be injected, if you are on a blood-thinning medication (. Coumadin, injectable Heparin), or if you have an active infection going on. With blood thinners like Coumadin, your doctor may advise you to stop this for 4-7 days beforehand or take “bridge therapy” with Lovenox prior to the procedures. Anti-platelet drugs like Plavix may have to be stopped for 5-10 days prior to the procedure. Aspirin should be stopped for cervical procedures for 10 days prior, but not for Lumbar.

Additionally, our study found a statistically significant difference in the discectomy rate for patients receiving an ESI by year. In 2004, % of patients received a discectomy after an ESI injection, while only % of patients received a discectomy after an ESI in 2006. There was also a trend toward a decrease in the crossover rate for SNRB that did not reach statistical significance. This finding may perhaps indicate improved effectiveness for the injection procedures. It may also indicate a trend toward more injections in a population that otherwise would not have been in danger of proceeding to surgery and would have recovered with continued conservative measures that did not include injections.
